Sydney and New South Wales

Sydney is one of the world’s best cities.

Sydney is a big city, by far the largest in Australia. The whole metropolitan area has a population of 4.5 million and extends from Wyong in the north to Wollondilly in the south – about 130 miles. To the west, it extends as far as the Blue Mountains – about 100 miles away. The main part of the city though is a 10 sq mile section centred on the famous Opera House.

There are some GP jobs in the outer suburbs of Sydney, otherwise the main vacancies in New South Wales are on the coastal strip to the north and south of Sydney. Plus, we have a few inland in more rural NSW

There are fewer jobs around in NSW now as the DWS (District of Workforce Shortage) restrictions have been extended to cover most of Sydney and quite a few of the regional towns and cities as well. You should also be aware that with relatively slow population growth compared to Perth or Brisbane, Sydney and the nearby satellite towns don’t have the numbers of new patients to support extra GPs. With this in mind, it’s best, if you can, to look a bit further out where there fewer doctors per 100,000 patients.
