NEW “DWS” Areas

The new system of determining where GPs can work was launched on July 1st. Out goes the old system of District of Workforce Shortage. In comes a new “Distribution Priority Area”

The map is here: https://beta.health.gov.au/resources/apps-and-tools/health-workforce-locator/health-workforce-locator

Put in the location of interest or click “search the map”. Then tick the box for “distribution priority area” (DPA).

As expected the areas where GPs from overseas (ie UK & Irish trained GPs) can work has been pushed out from the city centres.

Having said that, there are still some vacancies relatively close to the main cities:
Adelaide: We have a vacancy in Golden Grove which should meet the requirements
Perth: Gosnells, south west of the CBD, is a DPA
Victoria: Geelong is a DPA. We are looking for vacancies there
Other areas in Victoria. We have a vacancy in Hamilton, to the west of Melbourne, which is DPA

We are currently in Brisbane working, living and enjoying the ‘dream’. This road, which involved a fair amount of paperwork and lots of questions about the different applications i.e. AMC/RACGP/AHPRA would not have been possible without your knowledge and experience. Martina and particularly Lynn were also invaluable in the whole process. To have all of you answer the numerous questions I had all the way through the application process, no matter how trivial, was incredibly helpful. Can’t recommend the service provided high enough. Thanks to all.
