Melbourne and Victoria

Beach-Huts-300x225Melbourne and Victoria

A cooler more temperate climate makes Melbourne seem closer to home (the UK) than other cities. It has seen fairly rapid growth in the past few years, with lots of families moving into the suburbs. Melbourne is very cosmopolitan city with a wide mix of peoples from around the world. There are plenty of sports facilities around the city and it is a world class centre for culture and entertainment. The beaches are close by and skiing is available in the winter – about 3hrs drive to the north east.

Once outside of Melbourne, Victoria is a rural state with agriculture and tourism as the main industries.

Melbourne has been a popular place for UK GPs over the years and it is now increasingly hard to find GP vacancies within easy striking distance of the CBD (Central Business District). There are a few vacancies further afield and cities like Ballarat (1hr 30 mins north west of Melbourne) and Wodonga (3 hrs north east, on the NSW border) are good alternatives if nothing in Melbourne itself suits.

Working with Monique and Martina in Australia, (UK GP applying from New Zealand) made the laborious and pedantic process of applying for GP Fellowship and Australian registration much easier than trying to do this alone. It was still a long process but the team helped every step of the way, and were happy to liaise with the AMC, RACGP or AHPRA when needed. They worked hard to secure a good GP position for me, and overall I highly recommend and thank them for all their help in the process of relocating to Australia as a GP.
