GP Jobs in Australia – January 2019 update

23rd January 2019 | Uncategorized

Happy New Year. While it is currently just hovering above freezing here in Guildford, in Perth, it’s going to be about 30C this weekend…. We’re just waiting for the Immigration department to announce all of the changes to their visa rules. So far, the main one of interest is that permanent residents will be able to apply for a temporary parent visa. This’ll be valid for 3 or 5 years and renewable (up to a maximum of 10 years). There are going to be 15,000 available...

Australia to Stop Migrants Moving to Sydney and Melbourne. Does this affect GPs?

10th October 2018 | Uncategorized

A report in the Times (here but subscription required) says that Australia is planning to restrict migrants so that they can’t live / work in Melbourne and Sydney.  It will be a condition of entry that migrants must live and work where they are told to go for their first years. However, this will not affect migrants who have been sponsored by particular employers and who need to live & work where their employers are located. So, it looks like this won’t apply to GPs

Ways to get PR (permanent residency) in Australia

28th June 2018 | Uncategorized

The new visa system (see blog post and this post) has brought into focus the issues around getting PR (permanent residency) in Australia. It used to be that the simplest & quickest way was via the Skilled Independent Visa 189 (points tested) system. However, recently this has become more difficult – anecdotally, we’ve heard that you need to have  75 points in order to be in with a chance of being invited to apply (GPs can get 65 / 70 points but it is hard to get more without...

Australian Work Visa Update

25th June 2018 | Uncategorized

The Australian Department of Health and Ageing has sent out a bulletin highlighting potential skilled migration list changes.  GPs are not on this “potential changes list”, so they should remain on the Medium and Long Term Shortage Occupation List (MLTSOL) through to at least January 2019.  I.E. GPs should still be able to get 4 year / renewable visas with the option to apply for PR. However, the DoHA can change these lists whenever they want to but it is unlikely that they will...

The service I received from both Paul in the UK and from Monique and Martina in Australia was excellent. Initially I mainly was in contact with Paul whilst I was getting organised with registration which he helped with. He was extremely patient in answering all my questions. When I first arrived in Newcastle I was really pleased that Martina came to meet me there whilst she was visiting New South Wales (despite being based in Melbourne) and took me to my practice to meet everyone. I found this particularly helpful as I moved out here on my own knowing no-one so I was grateful to meet a friendly face. I’ve been here 5 months now and its definitely been one of the best things I’ve ever done.
