Wollongong and marina
This is a town about 60 miles south of Sydney. It’s a big place by Australian standards with a population of nearly 300,000. (This makes it the third biggest city in NSW after Sydney and Newcastle and the ninth in Australia).
It takes about an hour to drive to Sydney, so the northern suburbs of Wollongong are a commuter area and have higher prices. The area as a whole has a temperate climate – rarely below 0 deg C in winter and usually in the high 20s during the summer. Lot’s of things to do both within the city and around about. Some great beaches (Jervis Bay is not too far away to the south). Areas to live in: Look at Figtree (has a Westfield shopping centre), Keiraville and Warrawong (a bit mixed but has some very nice streets along with good shopping. On the south side, try Shellharbour or Berry.
Trains to Sydney take about 1 40 mins and, outside of commute time, it takes about the same by car.
More information: apart from the ubiquitous Google maps (use Streetview – the little orange man by the scale bar – to look around the area) and Wikipedia, these two sites might help with more information. Not all areas are covered of course and there’s no guarantee on the quality of information. Still it might be helpful in helping you to find the best place to be:
