This is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Quite a few towns like Katomba and Blackheath have GP practices.

They are generally quite small places (Katomba has a stable population of  about 8,000. Blackheath has a population of just over 4,000). You’ll be about 1 ½ hrs from central Sydney by car but what you’d really come here for is the scenery & the walking.

There’s all the usual facilities – supermarkets, restaurants etc. There’s also a cinema in Katomba.

Transport wise, you’ll need a car. Having said that, there is a good train service to Sydney (takes two hours from Katomba, less from some of the other towns). Tourism is the main industry, so as well as the local population, you may well be called on to give GP services to the visitors.

The main hospital is in Katomba and it provides Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, General Medicine & Surgery, Geriatrics and Palliative Care. 16,000 patients per year use the A&E department.
